This nice Mahi Mahi was caught off Oahu in early February. Large Mahi’s are such a cool looking fish!! Striped Marlin have also been reported with multiple catches on a trip. We have also seen a good amount of Aku (Skipjack Tuna) being caught with a dozen or more reported on some trips. February is usually a good time for Striped Marlin with Mahi Mahi coming in greater numbers in March. Bass fishing on Kauai has been good for small mouth bass lately. Tom reports some nice small mouth in the 4-5lb range.
December Fishing Report
December boats reported lots of Aku which is skipjack tuna so some fun trips reeling in a bunch of fish. They are not large, but are fun to catch. Boats also reported some Ahi, the one in the photo above was a nice sized one! Mahi Mahi and Striped Marlin catches were also reported. January should continue with Aku, Mahi, Striped Marlin and Ahi. On Kauai, Tom has been catching small and large mouth bass. Peacock bass are not biting this time of year, so need to wait till late spring and warmer weather for the Peacock’s.
November Fishing Report
November has been a great month for Mahi Mahi’s with multiple catches reported on trips. Mahi’s tend to hang out together, so if you can find a nice pile of Mahi’s it’s pretty fun as they are good fighters! Other catches reported include Aku (Skipjack Tuna) and Ono (Wahoo). Over on Kauai, the bass fishing has been good so far this month. Tom reported a nice Small Mouth weighing in at almost 5lbs which is a nice size for that species. He also reported some Papio in the 2-3lb range as well as Large Mouth and Spotted Bass and Bluegill. No Peacock Bass biting this time of year, but the other species have made for some fun trips. It’s getting cold on the mainland now, so it’s a great time to put on shorts and flip flops and go fishing in Hawaii!
October Fishing Report
October has been a great month for Mahi Mahi with some really nice catches reported all month long. Fall and spring are usually the best times of the year for Mahi Mahi. Mahi’s like to hang out together so if you can find a nice debris pile or bait area you can get multiple hook ups which is always fun! Mahi’s like to put up a good fight so they are challenging and fun to catch. We have also had some nice Blue Marlin reported in October as well, so the nice blues are still out there. Some other fun catches have been a bunch of Aku (skipjack tuna), which are really fun for the kids to catch (and adults of course too!). On Kauai, bass guide Tom Christy was traveing on the mainland much of October so not much to report from him. He’s back now refreshed and ready to get fishing again! It’s getting colder on the mainland with some states already getting snow, so it’s a great time to head south and fish in Hawaii!
August Fishing Report
August was a good month for Mahimahi, Ono and Ahi. Usually the fall is a good time for Mahimahi, but multiple catches were reported this month, with 4-5 Mahi’s being caught on multiple trips along with Ono. Pictured above is a nice Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) brought in with several Aku (Skipjack Tuna) that the kids caught earlier already on ice. Overall, fishing has been pretty good in August with lots of action. Sadly, August also brought the horrible fires on Maui which destroyed the harbor in Lahaina and most of the charter boats that run from Lahaina. While the Lahaina area in West Maui is closed to visitors, the rest of the Island of Maui is open including the charter boat harbor in Ma’alaea. Maui needs the support of tourism to keep people employed and help the island recover so please think of Maui for your next Hawaiian vacation.
July Fishing Report
Sailfish are not caught all that often in Hawaii, but the boat Magic on Oahu found this nice one in late July. Blue Marlin, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi were reported often this month with multiple catches of Marlin, Spearfish and Mahimahi on quite a few trips. Nice to come into the harbor flying several fish flags on a trip! Some good-sized Marlin were reported as were some really nice Ahi (yellowfin tuna). Fun for the whole family with multiple Mahi hook-ups and some nice Aku (skipjack tuna), with one reported at 27lbs, which is pretty good for an Aku. So far in August similar catches have continued so hopefully they will stick around the rest of August and into early September.
June Fishing Report
Summer is here and so are the Ahi! This nice Ahi was caught on the boat Magic off the Island of Oahu. We have also seen some nice Ono (Wahoo) caught this month. Still getting some Mahi Mahi has well and a nice Spearfish (looks like a skinny marlin) was also reported. Look for more Ahi, Blue Marlin and Ono into July which is one of our best times of the year for Marlin and Ahi. Bass fishing on Kauai has been good for guide Tom Christy, been getting some nice large mouth bass, some around 8lbs. Tom has been seeing some Peacock Bass as well, just need to get them to come up and bite which hopefully they will start doing as we move into July.
May Fishing Report
The 450lb Marlin above and Mahi Mahi were caught on the boat Wild Bunch at the end of April. So far in May we have had reports of some nice Ono (Hawaiian for Wahoo) as well as Mahi Mahi and some smaller Marlin. May is generally prime time for Ono so look for some nice Ono catches this month. Summer is almost here when the Blue Marlin and Ahi bite is usually at it’s best. Bass fishing on Kauai was interrupted several times in May due to flooding thunder storms on the island that brought brown water down the river so Tom was not able to get out as much as he liked. Waters have cleared up now so fishing should get good again.
