Spring is almost officially here and that means time for Mahimahi! Boats are already seeing some nice Mahi and in good numbers with multiple catches, one reporting 10 on one trip. Mahi like to hang out by debris in the water, so if you can find a pile of them you can get multiple hookups. The Mahi pictured here was caught on the boat Magic off the Island of Oahu. Boats are also reporting Striped Marin, Spearfish and Aku (skipjack tuna). On Kauai, bass guide Tom has been catching some nice bass lately. He says he is finding smallmouth and largmouth on beds. Notable recent bass catches are a 4 1/2 lb smallmouth bass and a 7lb largemouth bass. Peacock Bass are not biting yet, look for those more into the warmer summer months.
January Fishing Report
January has been surprisingly good for Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) . Ahi are usually around more in the summer months, but boats have been reporting Ahi in the 70-150 lb range lately. There have also been a good amount of Otado which is the name for Aku (Skipjack Tuna) over 20 lbs. We have also had some nice Ono (Wahoo) reported as well. Photo above is of some nice Ahi caught on Emma Nalani on Kauai. Tourism has been slower since the holidays so the boats are not getting out as much right now, but catching some nice fish when they do. On Kauai, freshwater guide Tom has been catching papio, sea pearch and small mouth bass. The large mouth bass have just started moving to the shallows the later part of January. Storms and cold on the mainland so it’s a great time to come over for some warm weather and fishing in Hawaii.
November/December Fishing Report
Late November our client on Magic caught a nice 145lb 89” long Striped Marlin (photo above). They had a great time fighting the fish. Striped Marlin season is just starting so look for more stripies now and into the early spring. Spearfish should be coming around more starting December as well. Boats are still getting some nice Mahimahi. Blue Marlin bite has slowed, but the Striped Marlin should hopefully make up for that. On Kauai, bass guide Tom Christy is still catching small and large mouth bass, some in the 3-4lb range. It’s snowing and cold in many parts of the mainland so December is a great time to dig out and come enjoy the Hawaiian warmth!
October/November Fishing Report
October and November are good months for Mahi Mahi so multiple Mahi catches have been reported. If you can find a nice debris pile out there, the Mahi’s will be around it feeding on the food chain, which makes for exciting multiple hook ups! The Blue Marlin have picked up and in nice sizes too. On Oahu we had a 519 and 345 reported recently. Through November and into December expect Mahi Mahi, Marlin, Aku and hopefully Big Eye Tuna in December. For the bass fishing on Kauai, Tom has been catching some nice large and small mouth bass in the 3-4 lb range as well as nice sized Papio in the 2-5 lb range. He has also hooked up some bluegill lately. Peacock bass are there but not really biting this time of year, those will pick up in late spring and summer. It’s warmer in Hawaii than on the mainland so good time to go fishing in Hawaii.
September Fishing Report
September has been slower for visitors to the islands since school has started and the snow birds aren’t heading to warmer weather yet. So, the boats have not gone out as much as they did in the summer months. Boats that did go out are reporting catching Ono (Wahoo), Aku (Skipjack Tuna), Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish) and some Blue Marlin. The marlin have not been in quantity but there have been some good sized marlin reported. October is usually a great time for Mahi Mahi in good numbers, so we are looking for the Mahi to arrive shortly. Bass fishing on Kauai is more small and large mouth bass with the peacock bass preferring the warmer summer months to bite.
July Fishing Report
June Fishing Report
On Kauai, guide Tom Christy has been out fishing pretty much daily lately, seems everyone wants to go bass fishing. The peacock bass have not started biting much yet, however ,Tom is catching other bass species. Small mouth bass in the 5-6lb range and some nice large mouth bass in the 7lb range with one around 8lbs. Peacock bass usually start to bite more as we get into the warmer summer weather. In offshore trolling we have seen some nice Ahi (yellowfin tuna) caught lately. We are also now into Blue Marlin and Ono season so should see more of those the next few months of summer. Bottom fishing off Waikiki is also fun, the fish are smaller but usually more action than offshore trolling as the bottom fish stay in the area. People are coming to Hawaii again so we recommend booking early as boats are getting booked weeks in advance.
April Fishing Report
April in Hawaii is generally the best time for Mahimahi and Striped Marlin. Boats reported so nice Mahi catches as well as Ono (Wahoo) and Blue Marlin. We also had some Ahi reported in the 100lb+ range along with some smaller tuna we call Aku. The Aku are many times caught in multiple numbers which makes for a fun time catching even though they are not the huge fish. Some spearfish were also reported, a spearfish looks like a long, skinny marlin. May is usually a great time for catching Ono along the 40 fathom curve so hopefully May will be a good month. More and more visitors are coming back to Hawaii and the boats are getting booked up sometimes several weeks in advance, so plan ahead and book early.
Bass fishing on Kauai has been good for largemouth bass. Tom has been seeing the Peacock bass lately, but they have not yet wanted to bite this season so hoping they do as the weather gets warmer.
